It’s so easy to focus on the physical changes that age brings. After all, it’s no secret that with age comes a few extra wrinkles, and maybe a few gray hairs. We may even find ourselves living in an assisted living facility because we have trouble getting around.
However, one of the most overlooked aspects of getting older is the positive aspect of getting wiser. The wisdom that age brings doesn’t nearly get enough credit, because even though youth might offer plenty of energy and fewer wrinkles, age brings something so much more important: wisdom and perspective.
With each passing year, we learn more about who we are, and perhaps more importantly, what matters most in life. We stop sweating the small stuff that doesn’t actually matter in the big picture, and we gain greater clarity. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “older and wiser,” it’s not just a saying — it’s reality! Here are some powerful ways that age can make us wiser.
We Choose Our Battles
When we’re younger, we sweat the small stuff — like fighting over a mark, or maybe we don’t want to do our homework that day. However, as we get older, these problems get a little more dramatic. Perhaps we have a disagreement with a friend, or maybe something didn’t go our way. We can find ourselves feeling frustrated and angry, and even losing sleep over it.
Yet, as we get older, we start to realize that these seemingly big problems are hardly that important. What’s most important is the love we receive and give, and the health and well-being of ourselves and the people we love most. We know which things to let go of, what to spend our emotions on, and what to save them for. Some arguments are not worth having — and age helps you filter those out.
We Accept Change
In our younger years, we may not love stepping out of our comfort zone. Change can be uncomfortable and irritating, to say the least. However, as we get older, we realize that even the things we try our hardest to keep the same always inevitably end up changing. From our looks to our jobs to our age to the house we live in — sometimes things inevitably progress and change. Nothing stays still forever, and age brings that clarity.
The wisest among us know that even when things don’t go according to plan, they tend to work out eventually.
We Become Patient
There is no one more impatient than someone who is young. They don’t have the same concept of time, and as such, they’re in a hurry about everything. Older people know that patience is a virtue, and patience is all about simply embracing the moment without getting annoyed about it. It’s about trusting the process and knowing that rushing rarely leads to the best possible outcome.
We Know Ourselves Better
As you get older, you come with a deeper understanding of who you are. We stop thinking about who we should be or who we want to become, and we simply accept ourselves as we are.
With this, comes not just greater confidence, but freedom to just be. No longer do we live within the restraints of trying to be or do or please. We stop chasing approval, and we do what makes us feel genuinely happy—this is something that money can’t buy.
